We're looking for King's staff and students to crochet granny squares to help us make blankets for babies in need. These blankets will be given to our partner charity Little Village, who will distribute them to families experiencing poverty across London. Granny squares are easy to learn how to crochet so even if you've never crocheted before, you can still get involved!
Little Village supports families with babies and children under five living in poverty across London. They run a baby bank network; collecting, sorting and passing on pre-loved clothes and equipment. Parents are also supported by Little Village's dedicated signposting and guidance team, who offer advice and links to other services. In addition, they work with families to share their stories and campaign to fix the systems that trap them in poverty.
How to get involved: 3 simple steps
- Crochet a granny square: Feel free to make as many as you'd like! (Please follow the instructions below)
- Drop-off Locations: Once your squares are ready, drop them off at any of our Donation Stations by October 27th.
- We'll Handle the Rest: We'll take care of stitching the squares together to make cozy blankets ready to donate to Little Village.

New to crochet? No problem!
If you're new to crochet, don't worry. This is the perfect first project! Below are a few suggestions to help you get started:
- Self-Guided Learning: Check out this YouTube tutorial or these written instructions to learn crocheting at your own pace.
- Crochet Workshop: Drop into our workshop on 21 September 3-5pm at Chapters Cafe for hands-on guidance. Details can be found here.
- King's Craft Club: Join King's Craft Club on the last Wednesday of every month from 12:00 to 13:00 at the King's Sport & Wellness Centre, Waterloo Campus.
Instructions for making your granny square:
- You will need:
- Double Knit yarn (DK)
- Scissors
- 4mm crochet hook
- Granny squares should be made up of 5 rows - approximately 5 inches wide (this will vary and that’s okay!) Here is a photo of what it should look like:
