BLIND BALLROOM DANCE VOLUNTEER

Our volunteers play a valuable role in supporting Step Change Studios to achieve its mission, enabling members of our community to dance, and helping to improve opportunities and outcomes for disabled people.

What You'll Do:

As a dance volunteer, you will act as a Ballroom and Latin dance partners, helping people to pick up dance steps and sequences, assist the dance teacher in demonstration, encourage and reassure participants, and contribute to participants having a positive, enjoyable experience. Our community dance work is about more than dance – it is about creating positive interactions that contribute to people’s wellbeing. Our dance volunteers play an important role in engaging in social interactions with our participants and creating a community of dancers. While we understand dance volunteers may not be able to volunteer every week, familiarity and continuity is important to our participants and the quality of our work so we may ask volunteers to support a minimum number of sessions (excluding sickness or unforeseen absence).

Dance volunteers may also be asked to provide other valuable support to enable people to participate, such as assisting participants between the dance location and nearest public transport. Any such request for support will be briefed by one of the Step Change Studios team.

Why You'll Love It:

You'll get your energy from from collaborating with people who share our values. We understand that what we do is about more than dance. We love what we do and enjoy learning from everyone around us. We aspire to lead by example, and to contribute to a sustainable and diverse dance sector.

What You'll Learn:
  • You'll be able to put your dance skills to valuable use, supporting blind students to learn, build confidence, and make friends. You'll develop your communication skills, learning how to engage blind and partially sighted people, as well as your own dance ability. Our volunteers tells us volunteering boosts their own wellbeing and sense of community. Volunteers who attend regular may also have opportunities to perform and compete.
What We're Looking For:

A fun, engaging individual who is up for a challenge and has dance experience. Able to make Saturday classes from 10:45am-12pm. Interested volunteers will be asked to attend a trial. If successful, you will require a DBS, which we will help organise.
