Foreign language speaking practice volunteer

King's College London is home to a diverse body of students and staff who speak many different languages. We welcome King's community members to become a Speaking Practice Buddy in our longstanding scheme.

What You'll Do:

As a speaking practice volunteer, you will:

  • Participate in 30min sessions with language learners to allow them the beneficial practice of speaking with a native speaker.
  • Listen, gently correct and encourage students to practice their spoken language skills
  • Expose students to the way native speakers use language.

The language learner is asked to bring content to practice and you will be given training on ideas to get/keep conversation going. Your role is not to teach, so you won't be expected to teach grammatical structures which are often difficult for native speakers to explain!

Why You'll Love It:
  • Enjoyable way to meet new people and speak to students from different backgrounds from all around the world
  • An opportunity to share your language and culture
  • Learn new skills from our training and during your speaking practice sessions
  • Improve your communication skills and boost your confidence in speaking to someone you dont know
  • Experience the satisfaction of helping others learn and develop their skills and confidence in speaking a foreign language.
  • Boost your CV with our volunteer certificates which confirms the hours you have volunteered and your participation in our training session.
What We're Looking For:

We are looking for volunteers who are:

  • Native speakers of the language(s) you are offering
  • Able to commit to offering a regular time slot each week to participate in the scheme.
  • Available online/offline for at least 30mins per week
