Start 2025 by doing something meaningful - be part of someone’s journey to a life beyond homelessness
Volunteer with Crisis this January and help someone experiencing homelessness in your area. We’re looking for volunteers to support people staying in hotel accommodation in London.
- During the morning and afternoon shifts your tasks may include:
- ‘Welcome and Reception’ greeting guests on arrival and getting them settled into the centre
- ‘Gap Duty’ where you will be looking after a part of the centre this is a great opportunity to get out a jigsaw or puzzle and start a chat with guests or other volunteers.
- ‘Meal Service’ could be table or buffet service of meals or serving teas, coffees and snacks
- ‘Neighbourhood Management’ cleaning, making sure the environment is tidy and safe, popping notes through guests doors
- ‘Help and Support’ you may be looking after salon or healthcare appointments or helping out with arts and crafts
- ‘Back of House’ supporting our QM’s with the centres stock, clearing rubbish and recycling, clothing store
- ‘Ad Hoc’ you might find you wrapping and delivering Christmas gifts in our hotels, supporting on trips to museums or our football tournament etc.
- Our night shift volunteers will ensure a peaceful environment so our guests can get a good nights sleep but may also be cleaning and preparing for the next day and chatting to guests who can't sleep
- Other duties as requested by Team Leader
- You will work in a pair at all times
- There will be a short briefing at the beginning and end of each shift which you must attend.
You will have the opportunity to be part of a volunteer led team making a real difference to the lives of people experiencing homelessness over the Christmas period.
- The opportunity to share existing or develop new skills in a friendly and supportive environment
- Access to relevant Crisis at Christmas training events
- Support and advice from Crisis at Christmas staff team
- Experience in running activities and supervising volunteers
- A platform for building confidence
- Skills and knowledge in providing services for people experiencing homelessness
- Positive attitude and a general willingness to get involved
- Ability to follow instructions
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with team
- Be flexible to move around the centre as and when necessary
- Have a good understanding of the aims of Crisis at Christmas and how the project works with year-round Skylight services and realistic expectations of what can be accomplished within the Crisis at Christmas time period
- Be comfortable escalating any concerns to the Shift Team for a resolution
- Sensitivity to the issues and needs of people experiencing homelessness and help to deliver the Crisis at Chrstmas services in a caring and inclusive manner
- We expect volunteers to comply with Crisis policies including health and safety, data protection and code of conduct at all times
- To maintain the privacy and confidentiality of all accessible information about guests and the organisation
- Be positive, productive and have the passion to help end homelessness
- We strive to ensure that our services are welcoming, remain relevant and are fully accessible to everyone that we help and support
- We are particularly welcoming of volunteers from diverse and other marginalised communities, as this helps us ensure the best experience for those that we are here to help
- People who have lived experience of homelessness are also particularly welcome to apply.
