Action for Conservation (AFC) is a grassroots charity using pioneering approaches to inspire and empower young people, aged 12-18, to become the next generation of nature conservationists and positively impact the communities around them.
We decided early on that to be a 'conservationist' couldn't just mean following a career as a field biologist or a campaigner. We believe that a passion for conservation can flow through anyone's life, whatever their day-job.
We encourage this through delivering workshops and events with young people, for example:
- WildED: It is a series of interactive workshops where students explore conservation and gain new skills, with the utlimate goal of designing and carrying out environmental action projects in their school or community.
- Ambassador events: A year-long programme open to young people who have taken part in our free summer camps with opportunity to learn about environmental issues and take part in environmental action and conservation.
UK wildlife has suffered significant damage over the past 40 years, with over 50% of species now in decline. The RSPB believes that only 21% of children in the UK have an adequate level of connection to nature. As children and young people lose contact with nature, they are less likely to fight to protect it as they grow older. We simply cannot afford to lose a generation of volunteers, supporters and professionals.
We want to inspire today's young people to a long-term belief in the wonder of the natural world, that shapes their dreams and actions however their life turns out.
We are looking for people with an environmental background or a demonstrable interest in the environment to become a volunteer workshop and/or event leader. We want people who are keen to share their knowledge of - and passion for - the environment with the young people we work with!
We are passionate about bringing nature into the lives of all young people, regardless of circumstance. Our programmes target young people from disadvantaged backgrounds living in urban areas. We want to challenge the idea of a ‘traditional’ conservationist so volunteers from all backgrounds and walks of life are very welcome.
